What is Superstition?

Definition of SUPERSTITION

a : a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation b : an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God resulting from superstition

: a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary

Examples of SUPERSTITION

  1. It is a common superstition that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck.
  2. tales of superstition, witchcraft, and magic

Common Superstitions Associated with Ghosts/Spirits

  • If you see a ghost and call it by its true name this will evoke the spirit.
  • Carry a vial of Holy Water, or a clove of garlic or a vial of Blessed Sea Salt to keep spirits away.
  • Avoid ghostly dreams by placing your shoes beneath your bed with one shoe pointing in one direction and the other shoe pointing in the other direction to confuse the ghost.
  • A ghost will not enter through a RED door.
  • A ghost can not cross moving water.
  • After someone dies cover all mirrors so the spirit can not use the mirror as a portal.
  • Evil spirits can't harm you when you stand inside a circle.
  • People say that spirits can't walk upon a path, so after dark don't leave the path/road.
  • A single light is left burning at center stage in theaters after the audience and all of the actors and musicians have gone because if an emptied theater is ever left completely dark, a ghost will take up residence.

  • Never slam a door. You might hurt a ghost who'll haunt you for the rest of your life.

  • When passing a graveyard or a house where someone has died, turn your pockets inside out to make sure you you don't bring home ghost in your pocket.

  • Look into a mirror by candlelight, you may see a very haunted version of your home.

  • Stare into a mirror between two tall white candles to see the spirit of a loved one who has passed away. Be forewarned their soul may get stuck in your mirror.

  • When a rooster crowes it signals wandering ghosts that it's time for them to disappear until nightfall.

  •  Closing the eyes of the dead before burial keeps their spirits from wandering.

  • Wash the threshold of your house immediately after a dead body is removed. This keeps the spirit of that person from returning.

  • Opening all the doors and windows where a person died allows their spirit a quick passage.

  • Bonfires and other light sources drive away malevolent spirits.

  • Originally on Halloween people carried turnips with candles inside for protection against ghosts - the origin of the Jack-o-Lantern.
